A reminder

for myself and to teach my daughter:

It's not about skirts, it's about modesty
It's not about buns, it's about long hair.

Laura - Thanks for your comment.

I certainly know that scripture, and have lived by it most of my life, but I wonder if that could be considered something that falls under the law, which we are not subject to anymore. The verses that follow also speak about stoning a woman who is adulterous, and we certainly do not subscribe to that law anymore.

I definitely believe in a woman looking like a woman, and a man looking like a man, so in that sense I understand how wearing a skirt can define us as feminine, but I do think sometimes when I see someone wearing a skirt for the sake of wearing a skirt, and it is short and tight, or with deep slits, that perhaps there are other clothing choices (ESPECIALLY other skirts), that would be more modest.

I don't want my daughter to ever feel like as long as she is wearing a skirt, she doesn't have to think about being modest. This does not mean that I think she should go and put on a pair of jeans instead.

Also, the women workers and friend in India wear the typical Indian outfits called "Salwar Kameez". which consist of loose pants with a tunic over top. Definitely modest, definitely for women, and definitely not skirts.

I just don't want the putting on of a skirt to be a thoughtless process, as 1 Timothy 2:9 does call us, as women to be MODEST in apparel.

I hope that clarifies what I was trying to say.

interesting blog girlfriend- this kind of topic always illicits all sorts of opinions and ideas.. I think it's great- I think it's great to wonder and learn and pray and make choices based on thought. I think that there is so much value in honest debate and conversation about the scripture and also about tradition. I often also think about the "appearance" part of being a Christian-(I am sure there are many people who think this stuff doesn't even matter at all- and well, I guess it doesn't if the rest of our life is just vanity and selfishness) sometimes I get confused... Something that always helps me is the simple truth that we must follow what brings peace- peace to us- peace to others in our faith. Like when Paul talked about living for your brothers convictions not your own- unless we would offend them- I think it is probably serious to choose to offend...? I also think of some vs. that says. The work of Righteousness is Peace.. and so ya, not like you were asking my opinions- but since I appear to be on this topic like Gromit :)- I really think that we should always do and say and dress as much to our ability to what brings us true Peace- and that is actually between us and God...
(is there a spell check on this thing?)

When I was struggling with the skirt thing, I asked Coleen and she brought up that verse. I also commented that it was in the old testament, and she said that's true, but she likes to think that what's an abomination to God will probably always be, no matter what age we live in. I totally agree that the modesty thing is more applicable to us since it's in the new testament. And sometimes it's more modest to wear pants than a skirt (like when playing sports or at a construction site). Robin, I loved what you said about peace. I got peace when I started wearing skirts all the time, so that's enough for me to know it's what God wants.
