Flattery will get you everywhere.

What is with people and their sideways, back-handed, slippery compliments. Would it kill you to just come out and say something nice without making it sound like that's not what you're trying to do?

Here's some examples of some nice simple direct things to say that when said with honesty will be appreciated by the receiver:

You look really nice.

I love what you've done with your house.

You are very talented at __________ (flower arranging, painting, raising children, writing, cooking etc.)

Here are some examples of things, that if said, will probably be less well-received:

You look pretty good considering.....

That dress really disguises your weight.

Aren't you lucky that talent you have for ______ (flower arranging, painting, raising children, writing, cooking etc.) has been bestowed on you care of your gene pool?!

You must have hired someone.
